Musings on black

May 18, 2014

For those of you who have been following Muse on Instagram and Facebook as well as browsed through our site, you will note that black is a common theme for our designs.

Why black? Well, black is a classic, sophisticated colour - easy to mix and match with your other wrist essentials as well as the rest of your outfit. It suits both men and women, which is a basic premise for most of Muse's creations. The colour black has many associations. There is an air of mystery that surrounds black. Black exudes an air of authority, independence and self-control. While a classic colour, black is also often seen to be edgy, goth and emo. There is therefore great versatility in the colour black. But ultimately, your choice of colour boils down to personal preferences.

In the semiprecious beads world, what are some of the beads which are black in colour and what are their meanings? Listed below are some of the black semiprecious stones that are used in Muse's bracelets to date.

1. Agate

There are many types of agate and black agate is but one of these. With a shiny finishing, black agate is widely believed to help with stress relief. It is also a protective stone and gives courage to the wearer.

2. Hematite

Hematite discs have been used in some of Muse's new additions. These have a dark polished steel appearance and add an interesting twist to the usual round beads in our bracelets. The name hematite originates from the Greek word, haimatitēs, which means "blood-like". This references the red colour of hematite in its powder form, not surprising given that it is an iron ore. Hematite is a grounding stone, believed to reduce stress and bring happiness. It is also known as a stone for the mind.

3. Lava stone

Lava stone is the hardened form of magma which flows from a volcano after it erupts. The beauty of the lava stone is in its uneven, textured surface, which makes it stand out relative to most other semiprecious beads. The lava stone is also known as a grounding stone and is believed to give permanence especially in times of change. It helps to dispel feelings of anger and encourages empathy.

4. Obsidian

Obsidian beads used in Muse's designs are matte black in colour, giving these bracelets a different look from their other usually shiny surfaces. In prehistoric times, obsidian was often used in weapons such as spears and arrows as it could be fashioned into razor-sharp edges. Obsidian is believed to be a balancing stone and is in fact, deemed to be one of the strongest grounding stones. It helps to dispel negative energy and keep the soul connected to reality.

5. Onyx

A shiny black bead, onyx is also a grounding stone, like many black semiprecious stones. Onyx is thought to protect the wearer from external negativity while helping with regulating his or her internal emotions. It also facilitates rational thinking and sound decision-making.

When you next choose your Muse, other than the look of the Muse that speaks to you, know also that there are other benefits inherent in the Muse that you pick!
